If you’d like to see more photos from the first StorySlam (without my large ursine body blocking the view), then checkout the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative’s Facebook page and click on “Photos” to view our Cleveland Stories: True until proven otherwise photo album. We’re currently working on editing the video footage from the event, so you’ll be able to see and hear all the storytelling goodness soon!
In the meantime, we’d love to give you an opportunity to put your visual storytelling skills on display by entering our Cleveland Stories Shoebox Diorama Challenge! Simply construct a story you heard at the StorySlam (or one of your own invention) as a three-dimensional model in a shoebox. The most inventive dioramas will be exhibited in the Cleveland Stories exhibition at the CIA Reinberger Galleries from April 1 – April 30, 2011. Each winning diorama artist will receive $50! That’s a lot of honey! Diorama Entry Form
Dioramas must be delivered by 4pm on March 21, 2011 and can be dropped off at either the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative (1309 Euclid Ave – Suite 200, Cleveland) or the Cleveland Institute of Art Reinberger Galleries (11141 East Boulevard, Cleveland).
If you need an idea for a place-based Cleveland story to tell through the timeless art of shoebox-diorama-making, then dive into our long list of historical resources. These stories are begging to be embodied in construction paper, glue and sequins. Alright, not all of them know they want sequins – that’s why it’s up to you to show how fabulous they could look!
Here are some Diorama making tips (in the rare case someone hasn’t recently made a shoebox diorama). I make a diorama of my den before every hibernation season, and I have 5 inch claws and no opposable thumb! So, this should be a breeze for humans!
I can’t wait to see your outside-the-shoebox creativity and hear more wonderful stories amidst the warm glow of an indoor campfire.
